The Science
L-Citrulline is a non essential amino acid that plays a key role in the urea cycle and nitric oxide pathway. When ingested, it is converted to L-Arginine in the kidneys, which then serves as the substrate for nitric oxide synthase. This produces nitric oxide, a signalling molecule that triggers vasodilation, the widening of blood vessels.
Unlike direct arginine supplementation, L-Citrulline is not subject to significant first pass metabolism in the gut, resulting in higher plasma arginine levels and more sustained nitric oxide production.
